Walks in 2010

December 8th Ashburton - Led by Ernie

Regretfully Jenni and I missed this walk, which included the traditional Xmas lunch.
However Jane and Peter both took photosgraphs and I have uploaded them all to PicasaWeb.
Jane writes:- It was so cold today, but a great time was had by all, and here are a few of my phone photos again, not too good, but Mary and Ernie took some also. The steps in one of the photos were so very slippy and it took a while to get us all down them with our any falls.......The lunch was super and a great meeting

December 1st - Dartington to Totnes - Led by Jenni & Tony

On a morning of sub zero temperatures when most of Britain was shivering under a blanket of snow, 13 hardy walkers turned out for a sunny walk from Dartington Cider Press. Passing through the village of Cott we went on to Totnes, up past the Castle then down through the town where we picked up the riverside path to return to our starting point.

November 17th - Stover - Led by Ernie

Tony & Jenni were sunning themselves in Tenerife on the day of this walk. Once again Jane was on hand with her phone to take the pictures. Jane writes:- So this is our walk today Tony, it was so very bad last night with heavy rain and winds Ernie decided we had to have the lunch any way at the Star Inn so we did and had a great time. Sorry the photos are a bit off, still on my mobile, should have taken the camera, but we all had so much to say to each other and it was so good to see Mary and Jo join us, also Tim and Heather.

November 3rd - Warren House Inn - Led by Joy

Tony & Jenni wimped out on this walk due to the extremely wet weather. However several more hardier specimens went anyway, and Jane took these photos on her mobile phone. Jane writes:- Had a lovely walk on the moor, started off dry and ended wet! Super lunch at the Warren House Inn and all seven of us had a good time! Joy told us all about the workings in the mines and the large population on the Moor at that time. We saw the site of the old tram lines and she told us so much about the area, even how they were fed with the rabbits from the warrens, so for Bob and I even is the mist did come down and blurr out every thing it brought the past to life for us. She also told us tales of the church in Widdecombe and the devil on his horse, so we expected him to come out of the mist at any time..Also the pub, the Warren House Inn has a fire which Graham says has never been allowed to go out, and the food was wonderful.

October 20th, Penn Inn - Led by Graham

Fifteen walkers turned out on this very bright though chilly autumnal walk through the woods of Milber then down to Haccombe House, taking in beautiful views of Dartmoor and the Teign Estuary. Graham had promised us an easy walk of just 3 1/2 miles though this proved to be a slight underestimate, later calculated by Dennis to be 5.65 miles.

We returned to the Penn Inn for lunch

September 27th Chagford - Led by Maureen & Dave

Fourteen walkers forsook the cloud covered coast of Torbay for the delightful sunshine of the northern slopes of Dartmoor.

Arriving at the popular village of Chagford, we then set off up on to the high ground of Nattadon Common with views toward the whole of the northern side of Dartmoor with Castle Drogo a persisting landmark to the Northeast.

On our way down and through the lush pastures bordering the infant River Teign we went through two fields of Meadow Ladies (and Lads) before arriving back at Chagford for an excellent meal at The Ring Of Bells

August 11th Noss Mayo - Led by Joy

And what a joy this walk turned out to be!

After a miserably damp Tuesday, Wednesday dawned bright and sunny for the eighteen walkers who made the journey down to Noss Mayo. We managed to fit all the cars into the smallish car park then set out along the creek with fine views of Newton Ferrers on the other side of the water.
Continuing along the carriageway built in the late 19th Century by Lord Revelstoke we had fine views over the Yealm estuary and beyond to the coast of Cornwall with Plymouth tucked away behind Wembury Point and completely hidden from sight.
On gaining the headland we spotted the Eddystone Lighthouse on the horizon before turning inland for the walk back to Noss Mayo.
Lunch was taken at The Ship Inn.

July 28th Dr Blackall's Drive Led by Graham

A lovely day for a walk on the Moor. Leaving our cars on the hill above Newbridge we followed Dr Blackall's Drive, a carriageway built in the late 19th century by Dr Blackall who lived in nearby Spitchwick Manor. After fine views over the Dart Gorge we went via Primm's Cottage to Leusdon Church then on to The Tavistock Inn for lunch.

July 14th 2010 Cockington, led by Dave

Defying the forecast for heavy rain showers, Dave led 18 walkers on a very pleasant walk around the Cockington Valley. After crossing over into Scadson Plantation and Hollacombe we returned to Cockington for a very enjoyable lunch at The Drum Inn.

June 30th 2010. Riders Rings and Black Tor, led by Dennis

A beautiful hot summers day but with a light breeze to keep us cool, 17 walkers set out from Shipley Bridge under the expert guidance of Dennis. We went up onto Brent Moor, across to Riders Rings, on to Black Tor before descending through the bracken to the River Avon and back to the car park. Along the way Dennis explained some of the history and skillfully navigated us across this mainly trackless area of the Southern Moor. Lunch was taken at The Royal Oak, South Brent (South Devon CAMRA Pub of the Year 2007 & 2009)

March 10th 2010 - Otterton Mill - Led by Mary & Peter Fox

A cold but brilliantly sunny day for this really enjoyable walk. Starting from Otterton Mill, we followed the west bank of the River Otter past the aquaduct before crossing to the other side of the river to continue down to the estuary where we had fine views towards Budleigh Salterton.
Continuing along the cliffs, with magnificent views across Lyme Bay to Lyme Regis, we stopped for a rest at the WW1 lookout point on Brandy Head before turning inland to return to Otterton Mill for an enjoyable lunch

A large turn-out with 26 walkers. The route we took was about 5 1/4 miles (according to Dennis) and you can see it on the map below.

February 10th - Widecombe in the Moor. Led by Dave & Maureen

Twenty walkers braved yet another cold but bright day with the temperature hovering around zero degC.
Heading north out from the village and avoiding the icy patches in the lanes we turned right onto the moor and climbed up toward Honeybag Tor then over Chinkwell and Bell Tors before returning to the village down Bonehill.
Fortunately the ice & snow were minimal and the mud crunchy.

The route we took was about 4 miles (according to Dennis) and you can see it on the map below.
