Denis & Maureen King took the photos and you can view them by

Once again Ernie led this now traditional pre-Christmas
walk around the muddy lanes and footpaths surrounding Ashburton.
As has become an annual custom, lunch was taken at The Victoria
and was followed by the usual "Stirring Prize" presentation. Click here to read
all about it. |

Warren Walk
David and Maureen led a party of 15 on a superb
walk over Dawlish Warren on 28th October 2009. The weather was
warm and sunny and the only hill to climb was the one to the Mount
Pleasant pub where we had lunch. |

October 14th - Decoy Lake
and Abbotskerswell- Led by Derek & Barbie

A really beautiful day once again, especially for
this late in the year. Twentyone walkers followed Derek &
Barbie on this walk and what an eye opener it was! Most of us
had no idea that such a fantastic walk was this close to home
as the vistas opened in front and behind every step.
Lunch was taken at the Court Farm, Abbotskerswell.
I think it was Heather who remarked "What a perfect day"
Hence the inspiration for the video music |

Fifteen walkers arrived at Stokeinteignhead on a
warm windless day for the start of this walk. Graham explained
to the assembled company the true derivation of the name of the
village, informing us that the name had nothing at all to do with
any river, Teign or otherwise. According to the Domesday
Book the district contained thirteen manors which totalled an
area of ten hides and the whole area was known as the "Ten
Hide".
We then followed what Graham described as a "difficult"
5 mile walk out of the village onto the coastal path at Labrador
Bay and into Shaldon, then via Ringmore back to the start where
we had a most convivial lunch at the Church House Inn.
Along the way Graham managed to lose most of his
troops when having marched them up to the top of a hill they stopped
for a rest and a blackberry snack while Graham continued to march
on to the bottom of the hill. None of the snackers noticed which
direction their leader had taken so took the opportunity to emulate
lost sheep whilst trying to work out how to operate their mobile
phones. A somewhat embarrased Graham had to reverse his tracks
and march back to the top of the hill so he could march his wayward
troops down to the bottom of the hill.
All agreed that Graham is now the odds on favourite
for the annual "Ernie Award" |

21 walkers turned out on this cloudy but warm day
for a walk across the (fortunately dry) Exminster Marshes. We
walked along the canal bank down to Powderham church before returning
for an enjoyable lunch at The Swans' Nest |

21 walkers had a most enjoyable stroll through the
fields and lanes around Torbryan and Denbury, visiting the Iron
Age hill fort at Denbury along the way. Lunch was taken at the
Church House Inn, Torbryan. |

Ignoring the forecast of heavy
rain showers 22 people had a most enjoyable dry and sometimes
sunny walk from Battery Gardens to Berry Head and back.

Ann & Colin led this walk from Ringmore to Bigbury

End for lunch |

Led by Graham and Jo, 18 walkers set off from Teignmouth
and through the countryside around Holcombe, returning via the
sea wall alongside the railway.
A drab misty day spoiled the opportunities for
far reaching views and ensured that any photograph taken lacked
the sparkle normally associated with this wonderful county of
Devon.
A most enjoyable meal was taken in Teignmouth. |

Heather & Tim led us on this bracing walk from
Paignton, through Goodrington & Broadsands to Brixham, a walk
of about 5 miles. Perfect timing ensured we reached our lunch
stop just as the rain started.
21 pensioners kitted out with anoraks, wooly hats,
walking boots, hiking sticks etc, all flashing their bus passes
ensured that the other passengers on the bus back to Paignton
were well entertained. |

Following England's coldest night of the winter
during which the temperature in Torquay reached minus 4 degs Centigrade,
Chris and Malcolm led 14 hardy walkers from the Double Locks pub
in subzero temperatures on what now seems to have become the traditional
first walk of the year.
Leaving the canal we made our way down to Countess
Weir where we crossed over the river and thence by various paths
we arrived at Exeter Quay. Some walkers took advantage of "Ernie's"
caff to warm up before returning along the canal to the starting
point.
Along the way we observed the antics of the local youths (why
weren't they at school or working?) as they attempted to break
the ice on the canal using large rocks labouriously removed from
the canal bank. |
